=OpenVPN=
This is a VPN daemon that utilizes a custom security protocol relying on the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol for session negotiation and key exchange. This differs from older protocols like IPsec or PPTP, OpenVPN was designed from the ground up to operate over both UDP and TCP, giving it an ability to traverse strict firewalls, corporate proxies, and restrictive public Wi-Fi networks by mimicking standard HTTPS traffic on port 443. It handles network virtualization through either TUN or TAP interfaces. TUN operates at the network layer (Layer 3) to route IP packets, it's good for standard routed IP tunnels, whereas TAP operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) to emulate Ethernet frames, allowing bridged networks and non-IP protocols to pass through the tunnel. Coupled with a cross-platform plugin and scripting support ecosystem, OpenVPN allows administrators to integrate multi-factor authentication, radius servers, and dynamic firewall scripts directly into the connection handshake.
==How It Differs From WireGuard==
When comparing OpenVPN to alternatives like WireGuard, the structural differences are huge and fundamentally change how each protocol approaches security and performance. WireGuard is a Layer 3 VPN protocol integrated directly into the Linux kernel, a lean codebase of roughly four thousand lines of code compared to OpenVPN's massive, modular architecture that spans hundreds of thousands of lines. WireGuard uses a fixed, cryptographic suite consisting of Noise protocol framework principles, Curve25519, ChaCha20, and Poly1305, OpenVPN relies on OpenSSL or mbed TLS, giving it cryptographic agility where administrators can choose specific cipher suites, hash algorithms, and key lengths. WireGuard relies on static public keys assigned to peers and handles routing via explicit allowed-IP lists without built-in user authentication mechanisms, whereas OpenVPN natively supports username and password authentication, certificate-based mutual authentication, and dynamic session token generation. These architectural divergences mean WireGuard prioritizes raw speed and simplicity, while OpenVPN prioritizes configuration control, policy enforcement, and flexibility.

==Why Would People Use This Over WireGuard==
Even with WireGuard’s speed and lean design, enterprise environments and system administrators, choose OpenVPN for its versatility. One primary reason is TCP fallback capability. In restrictive corporate or governmental network environments where UDP traffic is routinely blocked by deep packet inspection firewalls, OpenVPN can switch to TCP port 443, ensuring reliable connectivity where WireGuard would simply fail to establish a handshake. Another driver is granular routing control and session management. OpenVPN allows administrators to push specific routing tables, DNS configurations, and domain-name suffixes directly to client machines upon connection, automatically reconfiguring the client's network stack without manual intervention. Organizations with complex authentication requirements such as integrating LDAP, Active Directory, or multi-factor authentication tokens directly into the connection sequence find OpenVPN's plugin architecture better to WireGuard, which requires external scripting wrappers to achieve similar user-level access controls.

==From a Security POV How Is It Better or Worse Than WireGuard?==
From a security perspective, OpenVPN and WireGuard present trade-offs regarding attack surface, cryptographic agility, and state management. OpenVPN's primary vulnerability historically stems from its large attack surface due to its heavy reliance on external libraries like OpenSSL and TLS negotiation states. A vulnerability in the underlying SSL library can directly impact OpenVPN, and its codebase makes auditing significantly more difficult than WireGuard's compact implementation. However, OpenVPN excels in cryptographic agility; if a specific cipher or hashing algorithm is compromised or deprecated, administrators can easily update the configuration file to enforce stronger standards without rewriting the protocol stack. WireGuard's tiny codebase drastically reduces software bugs and vulnerabilities, but its lack of cryptographic agility means that if a foundational primitive like Curve25519 is ever broken, the entire protocol implementation requires an overhaul. OpenVPN supports Perfect Forward Secrecy through frequent renegotiation of session keys, whereas WireGuard handles key rotation differently through ephemeral Diffie-Hellman exchanges embedded within its transport packets, making both protocols secure against retroactive decryption but managing state and session lifetimes through entirely different paradigms.

==Pros==
Its main strength is its universal compatibility; clients exist for virtually every operating system, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and various embedded routers and firewalls. Its extreme configurability allows it to adapt to almost any network topology, whether establishing a simple point-to-point tunnel or orchestrating a complex mesh network with server-side scripting hooks. The protocol's stability in hostile network environments, aided by its TCP port 443 tunneling capabilities, ensures that remote workers can always establish a connection regardless of firewall restrictions. The community and extensive documentation surrounding OpenVPN mean that virtually any configuration challenge, troubleshooting scenario, or integration requirement has already been solved and documented by network engineers worldwide.

==Cons==
The most prominent disadvantage is performance overhead. Because OpenVPN processes packets in user space rather than kernel space on most operating systems, context switching between user space and kernel space introduces latency and consumes significantly more CPU resources, resulting in lower throughput compared to kernel-native solutions. Configuration complexity is another hurdle; setting up a secure Public Key Infrastructure, managing certificate authorities, generating client profiles, and tuning cipher parameters requires a learning curve. Additionally, establishing a connection can suffer from noticeable handshake latency, particularly when negotiating TLS handshakes and cryptographic parameters over high-latency networks.

==From a Japanese SME POV Why Choose OpenVPN Over WireGuard or Netbird?==
For small and medium enterprises operating within Japan, choosing OpenVPN over alternatives like WireGuard or cloud-native overlay networks like Netbird often comes down to risk aversion, legacy system integration, and corporate compliance expectations. Japanese business culture places an extraordinarily high value on stability, proven track records, and vendor accountability. OpenVPN has been in Japanese IT departments for decades, meaning local system integrators, managed service providers, and internal engineering teams have institutional familiarity with its deployment, auditing, and troubleshooting. And many Japanese SMEs maintain legacy on-premise infrastructure, proprietary ERP systems, and strictly compartmentalized local network zones that require granular Layer 2 bridging via TAP interfaces or routing policies that newer tools struggle to support natively. Tools like Netbird have zero-trust mesh networking, they can rely on external cloud management planes or newer abstractions that traditional Japanese corporate compliance frameworks view with hesitation. OpenVPN provides a self-hosted, auditable, and locally controlled system that aligns with the cautious, philosophy typical of Japanese small and medium enterprises.
