Mattermost
I'm not a huge fan of Slack, mainly because it's proprietary—my FOSS heart just can't help it! But what really gets me is when I team up with other open-source projects and they're using, well, not-so-open tools. Guess you could say I'm still on a mission to convert them to the dark side... of open source LOL.
Lets get into today's subject Mattermost , it is a secure, open-source collaboration platform designed for technical and operational teams working in complex environments such as government, defense, and critical infrastructure. It serves as an alternative to enterprise business communication tools like Slack, offering a self-hosted solution that provides organizations with full control over their data.
At its core
Mattermost is a messaging and collaboration tool that facilitates real-time communication and project management. The platform supports unlimited teams and channels, enabling one-to-one and group messaging, file sharing, and a fully searchable message history. It also features threaded messaging, emoji support, and custom emoji options to enhance communication clarity and team culture.
Focus
Its focus is on developer-centric features and integrations. The platform integrates with a wide array of developer tools, including Jira, GitHub, GitLab, and Jenkins, letting teams to manage projects and code repositories directly within Mattermost. This integration capability extends to communication tools like Zoom and Jitsi for video conferencing, as well as email and other messaging services, creating a unified communication hub.
Architecture
Mattermost's architecture is designed for high availability and scalability, making it suitable for large and complex deployments. The platform offers both self-hosted and private cloud options, ensuring that organizations can meet stringent security and compliance requirements. Security features include multi-factor authentication and single sign-on with OAuth 2.0 providers, as well as granular system permissions for precise access control
The platform's extensibility is a significant advantage. Mattermost supports the development of custom apps and bots, which can be written in any programming language and hosted on any HTTP-compatible service. It also provides a API and webhook system, enabling real-time data exchange and allowing external services to send messages or updates into Mattermost channels.
Other Stuff
Mattermost goes beyond simple messaging by incorporating project management features. It includes Mattermost Boards (formerly known as Focalboard), which allows teams to organize tasks, track project progress, and collaborate in real-time1. The platform also supports unlimited playbooks, enabling teams to create and manage structured workflows with ad hoc tasks, automated triggers, and stakeholder dashboards.
For organizations with global teams, Mattermost offers multilingual support, catering to a diverse user base. The platform is available on multiple operating systems, with native applications for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, ensuring accessibility across various devices.
Open-Source Roots
Mattermost's commitment to open-source principles extends to its customization options. Organizations can utilize custom branding tools and themes to personalize the user experience, aligning the platform with their corporate identity. Additionally, the Mattermost Marketplace provides a central location for finding and installing custom integrations and plugins, further expanding the platform's functionality.
Something to think about before you pay for that next slack subscription :)
