The prompts provided and the subsequent edits made by the user are fed back into the system to help the AI understand human nuance, professional tone, and context. For free users, there is rarely a "digital sandbox" where data stays isolated. The risks associated with this AI pivot are not theoretical. For businesses, the use of free email accounts by employees can lead to intellectual property leaks. If an employee uses a free AI tool to summarize a confidential project proposal or a legal contract, that sensitive information could potentially emerge in a modified form as an AI suggestion for a competitor. The lack of a secure "service boundary" in free tiers means that the walls of the corporation are effectively porous, with data flowing out to the service provider’s training servers without oversight.

The fundamental problem with Google and Microsoft is that they are "black box" providers. When you use proprietary software, you are a guest in someone else’s house, and they can change the rules and the locks whenever they choose.
Open source software flips this dynamic by prioritizing data sovereignty. When a business or an individual uses an open-source email platform especially one that is self-hosted or managed by a privacy-focused provider they retain ownership of the underlying data. There are no hidden "training" clauses because the code is transparent and can be audited by anyone. In an open-source environment, the user is the owner, not the product. The transition to AI-driven email is marketed as a leap forward in productivity, but it is currently being built on a foundation of exploited privacy. The convenience of a "smart" inbox is not worth the loss of digital autonomy. For those who value their secrets, their intellectual property, and their right to a private life, the current trajectory of mainstream email providers is unsustainable. We must move toward a future where "smart" features do not require "stupid" privacy trade-offs.
The solution lies in a conscious rejection of the "free" model in favor of services that treat users as customers rather than data sources. Whether this means moving to paid, privacy-focused providers or adopting FOSS solutions, the goal is the same to ensure that the tools we use to communicate remain under our control. As AI becomes more widely used, the need to be the owner of your data becomes more than just a preference; it becomes a prerequisite for freedom and privacy.
